In “Under the Sunny Veil” (2010), Ruslan Kutnyak transforms a sunlit portrait into an intimate study of colour, pattern, and human presence. Painted in oil on canvas, the work captures a woman wearing a broad straw hat and a vivid red sleeveless top against an open blue background. Her steady gaze anchors the composition, inviting the viewer to linger beyond the immediate brightness of the scene.

The woven hat gives the painting its distinctive visual rhythm. Sunlight passes through its small openings, scattering luminous marks across the woman’s face, shoulders, and chest. These irregular touches of pale yellow and white follow the contours of her features, turning the skin into a shifting surface of light and shade. The “veil” suggested by the title becomes visible through this delicate interplay: a translucent pattern that both reveals and gently obscures.

Kutnyak builds the portrait through a rich balance of warm and cool tones. Coral, rose, ochre, and lavender shape the face and neck, while the surrounding blue lends the figure a sense of air and space. The saturated red garment introduces a strong visual counterpoint, drawing the eye downward and giving the composition weight. Across these contrasting areas, visible brushwork preserves the physical presence of paint, allowing colour to carry both form and atmosphere.

Seen from a slightly low viewpoint, the sitter has a quiet, assured presence. Her expression remains composed and open to interpretation, suggesting a private moment held within the intensity of daylight. The generous curve of the hat frames her face, while the diagonal of her arm brings movement to the lower part of the canvas. A fine necklace with a small cross adds a precise, personal detail within the broader passages of colour.

Much of the painting’s appeal lies in the meeting of stillness and visual activity. The woman holds our attention through her calm gaze, even as the scattered highlights animate almost every exposed surface. The clear background leaves room for this encounter, concentrating attention on the relationship between the figure, the woven brim, and the light filtering through it.

At approximately 100 × 130 cm, “Under the Sunny Veil” gives an everyday summer moment a substantial presence. From a distance, its red and blue create an immediate impression; closer viewing reveals the subtle variations of colour within the skin and the intricate rhythm of sunlight. It is a portrait that rewards time, moving from radiant first encounter to a quieter awareness of the person beneath the hat.
